“When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God…”

Genesis 17:1

Abram was 75 years old when he arrived in Canaan, 86 years old when he fathered Ishmael, and now thirteen years later God shows up again to talk. Abram is now 99 years of age and “as good as dead” (Romans 4:19) meanwhile God shows up and says, “Abram I’m still going to complete my promise just like I said.”

Perhaps you’re in a similar situation.

You’ve heard God’s promises, you know His voice, but it’s been so long and still you see no tangible evidence to the fulfillment of His promises. You might feel like you’re “as good as dead”. In this situation God would remind us just like He reminded Abram that He is our “Shaddai” or Almighty God. This is the first time in Scripture God uses this name for Himself. The name is similar to the Hebrew word for mountain, which is interesting because throughout the Bible Mountains are viewed as unmovable and certain. What might seem like an unmovable and certainly impossible situation is certainly possible for God (Matthew 19:26). When encountering mountainous difficulties you have but to look to Almighty God and know that those mountains of trouble that have towered over you for so many years are on their way to being cast into the sea. Leaving you available to witness the ocean of opportunity that God has prepared for those who fix themselves to trust and obey.
